The family knew they had some challenges ahead with such unique requirements and it would take a very special, dedicated team to pull off all the complicated and specialized details.

Once the plans were made they flew from their home in Boston and after a few days in the city it was time to head west toward the Pacific coast to Los Sueños to begin the elaborate 3 day celebration.

The group arrived at Los Suenos Resort, checked in with the CR Luxury Diamond Concierge Team and the family met with their personal “in-house” wedding coordinator who immediately put them at ease ahd had every detail covered. Next stop….AAAAhhhhhhhh!

The bride said“ Once everyone arrived and checked into their luxury condominiums, everyone was so relaxed…..I think this set a great mood for the entire trip right away.”

It was November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving family did not want to miss that tradition either. The CR Luxury Concierge ordered a full Thanksgiving Dinner that was delivered to the family at their condominium.

This was another great example of the blending of cultures…An American Celebration, enjoyed by an East Indian family across the street from the rainforest, in Costa Rica! This just goes to show what a warm welcome can be found for all cultures in this little Latin American paradise!

The bride also tells us that the luxury condominiums were “such a great decision”. The next event called Sangeet, began almost immediately afterward…poolside at the private, Los Sueños Beach Club.

Just another example of blending of the scenery of this Latin American paradise and rich East Indian culture.

The Sangeet event began with drinks and appetizers, being served.

While the guests were sipping and dining, there were dance and musical performances, the Newlywed Game and an open mic for speeches from friends.

Then came the wedding day and it was spectacular right from the start!

In a more typical setting the family and guests of the groom would proceed together fully costumed and decorated to the home of the bride for the wedding ceremony. For this creative couple, there was an exciting twist!

With the groom’s dressed in formal East Indian wedding attire, he mounts a horse and the group of family and guests begin the colorful procession, called Baraat winding through the Los Sueños resort toward the Beach Club for Milni where the bride’s family greets the groom’s for the ritual exchange of garlands.

The wedding couple were married on a stage with floral alter specially designed and built right here in Costa Rica of wood with a steel bowl for a special fire just for this particular ceremony.

A tented beachfront reception, decorated in linens and ribbon of white, gold and green followed the ceremony. Drinks and appetizers were served as well as a fantastic, authentic dinner catered by the family’s favorite restaurant East Indian restaurant from San Jose.

This lovely bride commented that every task and request, no matter how unique, strange or unconventional, from a horse for the groom’s procession to a specially built stage and alter was possible due to the “can do” attitude of the CR Luxury Diamond Concierge team.

The beach, rainforest covered mountains, outdoor venues, spacious luxury accommodations and the oceanfront views allowed this modern, young couple to create a very personalized, unique series of events which blended their rich East Indianheritage with their love for the beach and the tropics for a spicy Latin twist!

This was an example of just one couple’s unique creative dream wedding.

Most of us have important goals that we hope to accomplish. Our intentions are good and our plans are often well thought out and well focused. We move ahead quickly towards accomplishing what we set out to do, but then all to soon we falter, stop and maybe even give up. Why? Because our instant efforts have not produced instant results. We get too tied up in finding that instant gratification that equates to success. But rarely will we ever see results as soon as we would like. So how do we keep moving forward while waiting to see results? How do we learn to wait patiently for some sign of success? How do we stay motivated to continue when human nature says that such a slow return on our investment must be a sure sign that our plans and goals are flawed? The answer is really quite simple. We need to better understand how the whole process works; in other words, we have to learn to accept how the principles of effort and return really work.

If we were to look at a graph depicting the rate of effort compared to return, we would see that the line for effort is much steeper than the line for return. In any project we undertake, all of the work and effort goes in at the beginning. Typically, we will see about 80% of our efforts expended about halfway through a project, yet only about 20% of the return on our investment will be evident.

The main reason behind this pattern is the need for a project to gather momentum. As you invest more time and effort, the results begin to build, slowly at first but increasing as the project moves along. It is at this point that we really need to practice patience. In order to see a project through to its completion, and actually see the return on our investment, we have to develop an “investment attitude.” By developing this type of awareness and understanding, we can better prepare ourselves for the necessary efforts we have to put forth.

All successful people, especially leaders, need to remember that the most important investment you will ultimately make is in yourself. Give every project your best effort and be patient. Don’t expect results right away, either from your projects or your people. Remain confident that your ideas are sound, and your goals attainable. Know in your mind that the results you are seeking will come.

Regardless of how things may sometimes appear, there is never such a thing as “all of a sudden.” Successes, and even failures, generally happen over longer periods of time than we realize. Change often begins to happen before its effects can actually be seen. The important thing is to stay focused on your goals. Keep working at them and keep putting in the effort. Concentrate on putting in the required work each and every day, knowing that eventually the big results you are aiming for will happen….

In conclusion, perhaps the fastest way to becoming a competent and successful leader, is to really get in touch with your young inner self. Listen for that little voice that is always there encouraging you to let go of your inhibitions and let yourself just be. Live in the moment, take some risk, trust others and above all enjoy what you do!…

Everybody has an opinion and that is a fact. Sensitive subjects like politics, religion, fashion or simply perspectives can spark a lively discussion. Who are we fooling here; they can start an argument every time. Now these are not the only topics that are touchy, but it’s a start. We will look at five (5) fights that you will never win, no mate how hard you try.

Views on politics are extremely touchy. I like this public figure, you like that one. I support this legislation and you don’t. If we were to get on the subject, it wouldn’t be long before the sparks flew. Fights about politics can never be won by either party. Why? Because both parties are going to hold to their position fiercely and will not be swayed. Therefore fights about politics will never be won and will end in a draw every single time. Don’t go there.

The same holds true for religious issues. This is a particularly sensitive topic and can cause a riff that will never be healed. At least for a long time anyway. You believe in God, I do not. The Bible is a factual book or a work of fiction? Either way, it is important to respect each other’s opinion and leave it at that. Trying to make someone see your way of thinking will only serve to alienate them further, so avoid this one, too.

Now we come to some fights that relate to relationships. Guys, let me tell you, it is the hardest thing in the world to keep peace with the little woman. The same may be said of some men as well (being objective!). I have found that there are at least three fights with your significant other that you cannot, will not and shall not EVER win.

The first of these is about her style and taste. When she asks you how her shoes, hair or jeans look, just tell her they are great. Even if you don’t think so. I know this seems like lying, but it’s more a case of keeping peace in your life because if you tell her she looks like crap, there will be blood; YOUR blood.

This is one of those fights that you can not only not win, but you could really hurt her feelings as well. Don’t do it. Please.

Then there are the issues of her circle of friends and her ex-boyfriends. When it comes to her friends, it is best to be entirely neutral and let her handle those. Under no circumstances do you ever comment that one of them is nice looking or has a personality flaw. It will not be well received in either situation. With the ex-bf’s, believe me, she KNOWS the mistakes she’s made and she STILL chose you. Don’t remind her of past relationship blunders. You cannot ever win either of these fights and IF you still want to reap the “benefits” of the relationship (wink,wink), don’t go to that place.

Now we have the penultimate fight that you cannot win with your mate-MONEY! Fights about money or finances have a way of returning at the worst possible time. It is better to sit down and discuss the options than it is to blame the other for the trouble. Discuss your money; don’t debate who did what because, guess what!, YOU CAN’T WIN THAT FIGHT!…

There are groups like U2, Bon Jovi and Elton John who have made careers in the music industry but they are the exception. Making a career out of personal training and becoming an in-demand trainer can be just as challenging as becoming a rock star. It takes a lot of time, dedication and perseverance to make it happen and then requires stamina, business skills and planning to maintain it. Many trainers struggle and as a result have short-lived careers.

Personal training burst onto the scene in the early 1990’s and peaked in and around 1995. Since then, growth in the industry has been steadily climbing but not enough to keep up with the gluttony of trainers being pumped through the certification process. This has dumped more trainers into the market then public demand and the availability of jobs. Where trainers used to seek employment at fitness facilities, recreation centers or private studios many of them are starting their own businesses just to be able to work. With little to no business experience these trainers fail because they lack the fundamental knowledge of the industry, mentorship and understanding of what it takes to have longevity in the field.

The appeal of making sixty to a hundred dollars an hour lures many people into the industry. While there are trainers making this hourly rate they are typically more seasoned, possess a higher level of education, have obtained a specialty, considered to be an expert or have gained notoriety. Most trainers earn far less. Unlike a regular job, trainers don’t work a typical forty hour work week but average around twenty to twenty-five hours a week. This is usually because working with people one-on-one or even in groups can be extremely draining to your personal energy. Every client requires a hundred percent of a trainer’s attention and focus. Most trainers find it difficult to be on top of their game for forty hours a week. As any seasoned professional will tell you, over packing your schedule with clients will certainly lead to burn-out and a loss of passion.

Another issue that arises for trainers is the ebb and flow of work week hours which impacts income. From week to week the number of hours can fluctuate due to client cancellations, illness or holidays. Trainers can seldom guarantee their income and it’s not uncommon to have twenty or thirty sessions booked and then have five or sometimes even ten cancellations depending on the season. There are also two significant down periods in the industry which occur during August and December. Income can drop to almost zero during these months and a savvy and experienced trainer knows how to budget for these times of famine.

Most independent trainers find it difficult to build a clientele when first getting started. Friends of friends or family members are typically amongst their first clients. Word of mouth is highly relied upon to build the business and for a short time this strategy seems to work. However, referrals dry-up quickly and unless a trainer has some marketing experience they often struggle to find new clients. Without the influx of new prospects any existing clients that do leave have a tremendous impact to their finances especially if the client was a regular.

Adding to the fluctuations in income and the difficulty in building a clientele there are long hours and a lot of unpaid time required to build the business. There is no benefits package in place so getting sick can be very costly. There are trainers who don’t take vacation because they can’t afford to lose the income. Unless you contribute to a retirement savings plan there won’t be any money put aside for you to retire on.

To get a successful personal training business off the ground takes effort. Even with a plan in place, it’s been my observation from over eighteen years experience that the typical career span of a personal trainer is roughly about five years. Some only make it to three and then succumb to the pressures of trying to make enough money to keep them going. They realize it’s harder than they thought and decide to do it part-time and seek full-time employment in another field or they stay in their current job and train on the side or just simply leave the industry.

This is the reality of the personal training industry which isn’t communicated to you in school or when taking your certifications. You are given no real business direction about how to be successful and little if any mentorship once you’re done. Like the rock star you are left to your devices to make it work and it’s either sink or swim.

Now that I’ve informed you of the challenges of being a career personal trainer you can analyze each situation and work to mitigate the obstacles. Here is a summary of the challenges a trainer must know and understand in order to build a career in the industry.

1)Lack of employment opportunities within fitness facilities, recreation centers and private studios leading to the need for trainers to start their own businesses in order to work in the field.

2)Minimal business experience and knowledge of the fitness industry.

3)Limited income ability due to number of hours a trainer can work in a week plus the added impact of client cancellations, holidays and illness.

4)High burn-out rate amongst trainers that attempt to work forty hours a week on a consistent basis.

5)Fluctuating income cycle with two definitive slow periods in August and December.

6)Relying on word or mouth rather than building a solid marketing plan to attract new prospects.

7)Long, unpaid hours to build the business.

8)Inability to take personal holidays and illness which can impact income generation.

9)Supplemental income may be needed if training does not cover the necessary financial requirements to cover personal expenses.

10)No benefit or retirement savings plan.

These are the facts. But what if I told you there was a way to increase your likelihood of being successful. What I’m about to share with you is not a guarantee of success but a chance to increase your odds, a shot at the stage and an opportunity to rock. Successful bands have great managers. Someone who knows the music business, is well connected and believes enough in the bands’ ability to help them navigate the competitive field. The manager is familiar with the pitfalls of the industry and helps the band avoid situations that could lead them down the wrong path. If the bands’ enthusiasm or direction starts to wane, the manager swiftly gets them back on track.

To help you obtain your rock star status as a personal trainer you would be wise to consider the services of a business coach. Someone who knows the industry, can help you understand all aspects of the business and how to get you started the right way. As a personal trainer, clients’ hire you for the same reason you should consider a coach. The client can learn to do it for themselves but they are more likely to be successful with a trainer coaching them along. You help your clients avoid unsafe exercises, provide correct technique and results oriented programs.

Business coaches have been around for a long time servicing other industries with great success. It’s only in the past year or two that a handful of industry knowledgeable fitness professionals made the move towards business coaching. These business coaches know the industry and are helping trainers through their own experience and by providing a mentorship opportunity which is much needed and lacking in the industry.

While hiring a business coach can’t guarantee your success because you still have to the work, it certainly will prevent you from making costly mistakes or heading down the wrong path.
