Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn’t mean you have to invent the next big thing – a must have that people can’t live without, a gadget that does everything, or find a gap in a market that needs filling. In fact there are no hard or fast rules to becoming a successful entrepreneur, just a simple formula of believing in what you do and having the knowledge and passion to develop an idea and grow a business.
You don’t have to be brimming with qualifications or have a university degree to become a successful entrepreneur; however knowledge is power when it comes to running your own business and expanding on what you already know will help you to develop a solid strategy. Keeping it simple and turning your passion into a career will make success easy as your enthusiasm will have an obvious and positive effect on your work.
Successful entrepreneurs come from all walks of life, some are now a-list celebrities whilst others remain anonymous in their work, and although there is no full proof guide to reaching the top, it is thought that most successful entrepreneurs share similar characteristics and have a certain way of thinking:
Have Passion
Make sure you get personal satisfaction from what you do, if you put 100% in you will get 100% out of your business. If you don’t enjoy what you do its likely that you wont succeed or reach your highest standards.
Be Serious
Believe in yourself and your product, be disciplined even though your new business maybe an extension to a hobby or a personal interest. Make the shift from it being recreation time to real hard work and forge your career ahead. Think like a successful entrepreneur at all times!
Organise Yourself
Do your research thoroughly from top to bottom and keep all your findings, you never know when you might need to look back at market trends or competitive products. Budget and forecast your finances to keep a healthy cash flow, and draw up business plans and proposals even though you don’t have to present them to anyone.
Think As Your Customer
Even though your venture is personal to you, don’t narrow your business too much or base it on your specific tastes and end up alienating your customer. Successful entrepreneurs know their customers back to front and upside down!
Promote Yourself
Don’t be backwards in coming forwards, be confident in your product and approach. Utilise network opportunities and attend relevant events and exhibitions. Word of mouth can be just as powerful and effective as a huge advertising campaign.
Invest Back
You may make money straight away or it may take you a few months or even years, but when the money does start to come in make sure you invest back into your business. Be sensible with your money and have a budget, pay yourself a set wage but pay your company too so that you can keep up to date with the ever changing market. Consider investing in new technology to advance your product or employ extra staff if they would make a visible difference in sales or the smooth running of things. Look after your company and it will look after you.
Be One Step Ahead
Think ahead of the competition and make sure you have a unique selling point so that customers can differentiate you from the rest and choose your company above the others.
Don’t Be A Jack Of All Trades
When you run your own business it can be interesting or even a necessity to multi-task, but don’t take on too much. Trying your hand at something that is completely out of your depth could lower the standards of your business. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or delegate to those working with you.
Be Open To Change
Successful entrepreneurs know when to give up on a project that is failing, don’t try to carry on and face losing money and motivation. Take a step back and asses the situation, change your outlook and try an alternative.
So whether you want to be the next Richard Branson, James Dyson or the person who invented the lawn mower; then its safe to say that as long as you have armfuls of research, an abundance of passion and enthusiasm, and a forward thinking mind set, then you too could have what it takes to be a very successful entrepreneur.
